What was objective in the Battle of Vicksburg?

The objective of the Battle of Vicksburg was to gain control of the Mississippi River, which was a vital transportation route for the Confederate States of America.

- Controlling the Mississippi River would cut off the Confederate states west of the river from supplies and reinforcements, and it would also open up a direct route for Union forces to invade the Confederate heartland.

- The city of Vicksburg was a key Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River. It was located on high bluffs overlooking the river, and it was heavily fortified with artillery.

- The Union launched several unsuccessful assaults on Vicksburg before finally laying siege to the city in May 1863. The siege lasted for 47 days, and during that time, the Union forces bombarded Vicksburg with artillery and dug trenches to cut off the city's supplies.

- On July 4, 1863, the Confederate forces in Vicksburg surrendered to the Union forces. This was a major turning point in the American Civil War, and it helped to secure the Union victory.
