The Battle of Salamis was a naval battle that took place between the Persian Empire and a coalition of Greek city-states in 480 BC. The battle was fought in the straits between the mainland and the island of Salamis, near Athens. The Greek fleet, led by the Athenian general Themistocles, defeated the much larger Persian fleet, led by the Persian king Xerxes I. The victory at Salamis marked a turning point in the Greco-Persian Wars, and is considered one of the most important battles in history.
