History of Europe

Did the Romans ever rule Ukraine?

The short answer is: no. The Roman Empire never directly controlled Ukraine.

However, the Roman Empire did have some influence on the region. For example, the Romans built a fort called Tyras in the 6th century BC on what is now the southern coast of Ukraine. The fort was abandoned after a few decades but it is still considered one of the earliest examples of Roman influence in the region.

In addition to building Tyras, the Romans also traded with the people of what is now Ukraine. They exported wine olive oil and luxury goods to the region and imported grain furs and slaves. The Romans also established a number of trading posts along the Black Sea coast which allowed them to trade directly with the Scythians and other peoples who lived in the region.

Finally, the Roman Empire also had some political influence on what is now Ukraine. For example, the Romans supported the Sarmatians in their war against the Scythians and they also helped to establish the Bosporan Kingdom which was a Roman client state on the Crimean Peninsula.
