Why did the Japanese army invade manchuria in1937?

The Japanese army did not invade Manchuria in 1937. They did invade Manchuria in 1931, an event known as the Manchurian Incident. The Japanese sought to expand their empire and gain access to Manchuria's resources, such as coal, iron ore, and timber.
